India holds world’s biggest general election

India has just completed the world’s biggest general election.

Unlike New Zealand which has an election that lasts one day, India had to runtheir election over 5 weeks.

Run in 9 different phases across the country it was the longest election in the countries history.

According to the Election Commission of India, 814.5 million people were eligible to vote,  making this the largest-ever election in the world.

A total of 8,251 candidates contested for the 543 seats in Parliament.

India’s Hindu nationalist BJP party led by Narendra Modi scored a resounding victory and has been announced as the new ruling party.

The goal of the new party is to turn the Indian economy around and develop a great sense of unity within the country.
