It has 25,000 permanent seats, room for 5,000 more temporary seats, and space for about 36,000 people at concerts. The opening showed why leaders chose to build a roof, as heavy rain fell outside while everyone inside stayed warm and dry.

Mayor Phil Mauger said he was delighted the stadium was finished on time and on budget. He said the bad weather on opening day proved the covered design was the right choice. He also said the stadium was one of the last important parts of Christchurch’s earthquake recovery. Along with other new places in the city, he believes it will help make Christchurch a major centre for sport and events.

The ribbon was cut at the opening ceremony, and former All Black Dan Carter kicked a conversion through the posts. Carter said it was a great honour to be part of the day. He also said he was relieved the kick went over. He believes the stadium will be the setting for many special memories, records and historic moments.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the new stadium world-class. He said it could help Christchurch attract big events and concerts from around the world. That, he explained, could bring more visitors into the city and help local hotels, bars and businesses.

Venues Ōtautahi chief executive Caroline Harvie-Teare said the stormy weather perfectly showed the value of having a roof. The stadium’s first sporting event will be Super Rugby Pacific’s Super Round over Anzac weekend, with five matches in three days. Around 75,000 people are expected to attend. The first concert will be in May, and international stars Robbie Williams and Foo Fighters are also due to perform there later.

Christchurch’s new covered stadium has officially opened.
