One group, upset after losing a spot in the parade, started throwing tomatoes in a playful act of rebellion. The tomato fight continued each year, with participants bringing their own tomatoes until the town council eventually provided the fruit, making it an official celebration.<\/p>\n
The festival began as a harmless prank, but it quickly grew in popularity, symbolising rebellion and fun during a time of strict rules and poverty under Spain\u2019s dictator, Francisco Franco. Although the town council tried to stop the festival by canceling the parade the next year, the boys still showed up with tomatoes, and the tradition continued.<\/p>\n
