Scientists in Iceland have warned that one their country’s biggest volcanoes, Bardarbunga, is showing signs it may erupt.

If the Bardarbunga volcano erupts, it could lead to flooding or might throw out clouds of gas, which could effect large parts of Europe.

In 2010 Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted. It was such a large eruption that it  produced an ash cloud so huge that many airports in Europe had to close.

At this stage the mountain is on an “orange” alert, the second-highest level. This means that there is the potential of eruption.

Last week  the area around Bardarbunga has its strongest earthquake in 18 years.

Iceland’s volcanic experts are continuing to keep a close eye on the area.
