'Once in a hundred year' storm hits Canterbury

A massive storm has hit Canterbury, forcing the evacuation of homes, causing slips and cutting power to thousands of people.
MetService said 160mm of rain had fallen on Lyttelton in the past 24 hours.
Police have had to evacuate around 19 households from three streets after a landslip while the fire service received 187 calls between 6am and 4pm.
The squall is blazing up the country, bringing gale force winds to the lower North Island.
A number of schools across Christchurch were forced to close their doors due to the extreme weather.
