Benjamin Astbury has just celebrated his first birthday but this is a much bigger deal than you may think because doctors predicted Benjamin would not live that long.
Born premature, Benjamin arrived almost 3 months earlier than expected and weighed less than half a kg! The average baby weighs 3.4kg (3400 grams), Benjamin was only 500 grams when he was born and is the smallest baby ever born at Wrexham Maelor Hospital in the UK.
After suffering 5 cardiac arrests, Benjamin was given a 1 in 10 chance of surviving as doctors told his parents that he did not have enough strength to fight his health issues.
Benjamin was put on a ventilator and underwent tests to check for inflammation and infection. A good test result is a score under 4, Benjamin tested a score of 324.
However this lucky little fighter passed all expectation and turned 1 on April 15th. He is now a healthy weight and is living at home. Benjamin still has several operations ahead of him but his family is confident that he will pull through as he has done through all the obstacles so far.
Congratulations Benjamin, Happy Birthday!
