Navy staff at the Devonport Base have welcomed their newest ship – the HMNZS Aotearoa.

The new boat measures 173 meters long and weighs around 24,000 tonnes. It is now the largest ship in the New Zealand Navy.

The ship has cost New Zealand more than $500 million and was built in Korea.

The HMNZS Aotearoa has numerous features. It is equipped with a thicker grade of steel which means that it can travel through the Ross Sea which is around Antarctica.

The ship also has two desalination plants on board. This means that the ship can produce 100,000 litres of freshwater every day from sea water.
