On Hawaii’s Big Island, lava gushing out from a volcano has caused a state of emergency to be declared.

The Kilauea volcano has caused a lava flow that is travelling close to 250 metres per day towards a group of Hawaiian homes.

The lava flow is now within less than a mile of these homes and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says it could reach these homes within the week.

At this point, no one has been hurt as a result of the lava flows.

For 31 years, the Kilauea volcano has been erupting but a new vent that opened in June this year has caused more lava to flow.
