The South Island town of Hanmer Springs was cut off from the rest of the country earlier this week due to a major forest fire.
Thirty residents were evacuated to the town’s sports pavillion after homes were threatened and the town’s power supply was also cut.
The fire started by a nearby river and then spread into 50 hectares of steep land and was quickly burning out of control.
There were 17 fire crews fighting the blaze at its peak, including four helicopters.
