The government has started handed out a ‘cost of living’ payment to eligible New Zealanders.

Announced as part of Budget 2022, the government is giving $350 to lower income New Zealanders.

The payment is estimated to cost $814 million – which is being funded out of the remaining money in the Covid-19 plan.

The payment is available to New Zealanders who are tax residents, aged 18 and older, and who earn less than $70,000.

People who are in prison do not qualify for the payment.

How much money will eligible people receive?

Eligible residents will receive an overall payment of $350 split into three monthly instalments of roughly $116.

The scheme averages out to an additional $27 per week.
