Armed robbers have stolen tens of millions of dollars worth of diamonds at Brussels Airport, Belgium.

On Monday evening the robbers broke through a fence  and stole the gems as they were being loaded from a security van onto a plane bound for Switzerland.

They escaped back through the same hole.

Caroline De Wolf, from the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, said the haul was estimated to be worth 50million euros ($80 million NZ).

“What we are talking about is obviously a gigantic sum,” De Wolf told Belgium’s VRT broadcaster.

The robbery has been described as “one of the biggest” ever.

  1. I read “Gigantic Diamond Robbery at Brussels Airport” and I thought it was absurd. It is crazy that it is possible to rob an airport because there is so much security. $80 MILLION worth of diamonds were stolen which should be impossible. I wonder how much security there was around the diamonds; it seems like there wasn’t much. Airports usually have more security than that because with the proper amount of security the diamonds would not have not been stolen. I hope and wonder if the diamonds will be found.
