A giant ship, around 400m long is blocking the Suez Canal.

The ‘megaship’ named the Ever Given is one of the largest ships in the world.

It became stuck near the southern end of the canal on Tuesday, causing a huge jam of vessels at either end of the canal. At this stage the grounding has been blamed on high winds and a sand storm.

The Suez Canal is a key shipping lane to Asia-Europe, it connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and is the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe.

It has been used to transport goods for over 100 years and today 12% of all global trade travels along its waters. Around 50 ships a day passed in 2019, according to Egyptian government statistics.

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said it was working to refloat the giant ship, using rescue and tug units. Its chairman, Admiral Osama Rabie, also said they had reopened an older section of the canal to ease the marine traffic caused by the incident.
