George Bennett has become the first Kiwi to finish on the podium at one of the cyclings five monuments.

The 30-year-old finished second at Il Lombardia in Italy on Sunday morning. He was denied victory by star rider Jakob Fuglsang who made a late surge.

Fuglsang attacked Bennett on the final climb to ride away for victory, and Bennett ended up 31 seconds back, with Fuglsang’s Astana team-mate, Aleksandr Vlasov, 20 seconds behind in third.

The result for Bennet comes just three days after his win at the Gran Piemonte one-day race – his second victory as a professional rider.

Bennett now heads to the Tour de France which starts at the end of this month.
