Flooding has devastated areas of the Southland as record rain levels have fallen over the last 3 days.

Residents in areas of Gore and Mataura have been asked to evacuate from their homes. This comes after three days of heavy rain put the Mataura River at risk of breaking its banks.

A state of emergency was declared in Southland yesterday afternoon.

Civil Defence has told residents in Southland to have their bags packed if last-minute evacuations are needed.

Gore Mayor Tracy Hicks said some houses close to rivers were being sandbagged incase of flooding.

She said “I’ve lived here for a long time and I can’t recall constant rain like we’ve had in the last three days.”
