The popular statue of a young girl on Wall Street will stay up for this year at least.
The statue is known as Fearless Girl and has been placed opposite the famed “Charging Bull” on Wall St in New York.
WHAT IS FEARLESS GIRL?
Fearless Girl is a bronze sculpture by Kristen Visbal. It shows a defiant girl staring down the well-known Charging Bull (or “Wall Street bull”) statue.
It was installed in March 2017.
It was initially an statement about the lack of women in leadership of big American companies.
The plaque below the statue states, “Know the power of women in leadership. SHE makes a difference.”
The statue measures approximately 130 cm tall, and weighs about 110 kg.
The mayor of New York, Bill De Blasio, said the political turmoil surrounding Republican President Donald Trump makes the endearing child particularly relevant.
“She is inspiring everyone at a moment when we need inspiration,” he said.
Visbal, the creator of the work, said she has received more than 1,000 emails from India, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and elsewhere, including one from a mother who wanted to wallpaper her daughter’s room with the girl’s image.
