Experts have started fixing the Christchurch Poo Ponds, located in the suburb of Bromley.
The Bromley plant was badly damaged by a fire last November. This has meant that many locals have had to deal with a putrid smell coming from the ponds because the toilet waste has not been filtered. YUCK!
Pleasingly, work to remove the rotting material (yes – toilet waste!!!) inside the filters began last week.
Diggers have started the huge job. One digger has been parked at the top of a ramp at the edge of one of the two filters and another excavator is located inside pushing the material to the wall so it can be scooped out.
Contractors are working 12 hours a day, six days a week to remove 26,000 cubic metres of material from the filters. The aim is to get it completed by September.
The council hopes the smell improves as the material is removed and special pumps improve the quality of effluent going into the ponds.
