The new Erebus Memorial being built in Auckland is facing protest from local residents.

Construction is due to start next week.

However, a group of Parnell residents is planning a camp on the site in an attempt to stop construction.

The construction of the memorial is being completed in the Parnell Rose Gardens.

The memorial will honour those who died in the tragedy, as well as the people involved in the recovery of their bodies from the mountain.

The protestors believe that future Aucklanders need this land preserved.

What is Erebus?

On the 28 November, 1979 Air New Zealand flight 901 crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica.

All 257 on board were killed.
