Why are dogs so weird about having to circle before they do anything!?
Well in the wild Dogs would spin to trample down tall grasses and to drive away snakes and insects. They would also spin in circles to indicate to other dogs wandering by that the territory had already been claimed.
This territorial instinct could also relate to dogs need to keep clean and hygienic, which would explain why dogs spin around before they go to the toilet.
As in spinning around and making a clean spot there is a lesser chance that any of their waste will stick to their fur. However this is just a theory and there is an even newer, weirder theory about puppy poop spins involving magnetoception, which allows animals to feel the earth’s magnetic fields.
Could dogs use magnetoception to do their business in exactly the same direction?
