Digital driver’s licences are just around the corner in New Zealand.

Last week, the Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) is considering introducing a digital driver’s licence people would keep on their phones.

This new move will require changes to both the law and a rule that prescribes the form and format licences must take, and when they must be surrendered.

At this stage, no privacy or risk assessments had been done yet.

An initial research study suggested that a new digital licence could include dates for when a warrant of fitness and registration is due, and what tolls have not been paid.
