Definition of astronaut changed

The definition of an astronaut has been changed by the United States.

New Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules now say that an astronaut must be part of the flight crew and make contributions to space flight safety.

That means billionaires Jeff Bezos and Sir Richard Branson who has just travelled into space, are not yet be astronauts in the eyes of the US government.

These are the first changes since the FAA wings programme began in 2004.

Before the change the definition of an astronaut was a space-goers who has travelled 80km above the Earth’s surface. Both Bezos and Branson had accomplished this.
