David Carter has been voted in as the new Speaker in Parliament.
Mr Carter beat Labour MP Treavor Mallard by a vote of 62 votes to 52.
The Speaker has one of the most important jobs within Parliament. He chairs meetings and acts as landlord for Parliament’s buildings.
His main job however, is to make sure Members of Parliament behave themselves when they are debating and that proper rules are followed.
Carter has taken over from Lockwood Smith who has a new job in London. The new Speaker said he would try to match Dr Smith’s fairness in the House.
“I see my responsibility being akin to a referee, reffing the inevitable Super 15 final between the almighty Crusaders and one of the others.”
“And as a referee, having to make an instant decision, and of course not having access to the whistle. But I will have access to yellow and red cards, though I hope they are used infrequently.”
