The Cook Strait ferry, the Kaiarahi, has broken down, causing disruption to thousands of holiday travellers.

The Kaiarahi needs its gearbox repaired which will happen early in 2022.

The sailing times for around 10,000 summer holiday travelers are being changed because of Cook Strait ferry cancellations.

Kiwi Rail said they will be contacting people over the next week to rearrange a new timetable.

A freight-only ferry, the Valentine, is due to arrive in mid-December to help with the backlog.
