The current MP for Botany, Christopher Luxon, has been chosen as the new leader of the National Party.
He was voted in by the other National members of parliament earlier today. MP Nicola Willis was selected as his deputy.
Luxon takes the place of Judith Collins who was voted out of the leadership last week.
He is a former leader of Air New Zealand and said that it is an “incredible privilege and honour to be elected leader of the National Party”.
Luxon thanked Judith Collins for her service during “a very difficult period” for the party in his opening speech.
He said National will offer a good alternative to this government. He believes that “New Zealand needs an alternative now more than ever to take us in the right direction because frankly, the country is heading the wrong way.”
