Christchurch city councillors have voted to reduce the capacity of its new stadium.

The new stadium will have 25,000 seats instead of the 30,000 that were originally planned.

The City Council highlighted an estimated budget blowout by $88million would happen if the original plan was continued.

The New Zealand Rugby has warned the council that a stadium of this size would be too small for major international rugby games.

The facility was to have a rectangular pitch, be fully covered, and have a 50-year lifespan.
