Rebuilding the Christchurch Cathedral, following the 2011 earthquakes has begun.

Last week the current quake-damaged Cathedral was blessed, to allow for physical work to begin on-site.

The blessing was a pivotal moment in the restoration of the holy site. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event was live-streamed for people to watch from home.

The lockdown delayed the start of the project by over a month.

The first job for experts is stabilising the building which will take 18 months.

The total restoration will cost around $100 million and will take between seven to 10 years.
