In 1989 over half of New Zealand Kids cycled or walked to school and only one third came by car. Nowadays these numbers have reversed, with New Zealand school children choosing to drive by car rather than use similar alternatives. In fact New Zealand parents take a quarter of a million car trips every morning just to drop their children off at school.
Not only are the car trips a harmful environmental risk, due to the damaging fuel emissions, but the data highlights a growing issue regarding the health and wellbeing of school aged children. Furthermore two Ministry of Transport reports recently stated that walking and cycling by children aged between five and 14 has dropped from an average of two hours and 10 minutes in 1990 to only one hour and four minutes in 2013.
This information is certainly concerning and school aged children should make sure they stay proactive for a substantial proportion of their day. It is also recommend that whenever they can school kids should cycle, walk or use public transport as a means of transport.
