The Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, is in hospital with the hiccups.

Bolsonaro was rushed to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, after being struck down with hiccups, which have lasted for more than 10 days.

In a written statement, the president said additional tests would be carried out to determine whether he needed emergency surgery.

In recent weeks Bolsonaro popularity has plunged due to public anger over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and failure to secure sufficient vaccines.

More than 535,000 Brazilians have died due to an illness Bolsonaro has called a “little flu”.
