A British boy aged three has had his chest left open for five days in a world first operation.

While his heart was open for those 5 days his beating heart was on view after surgeons had to flip his heart around during a complex operation.

Surgeons left his heart open so that the swelling would go down.

Carson Ayre, was born with his heart back to front which is an extremely rare condition, known as transposition of the great arteries. without the operation the boy would have died.

Remarkably, it was the third open heart operation Carson has undergone. He went under the knife just weeks after he was born and had a pacemaker fitted when he was nine months.
