Bananas might not exist in five to 10 years!  That means no more banoffi pie, no more banana split, no more banana cake ……

According to plant expert, Ioannis Stergiopoulos, a fast-advancing  fungal disease could threaten the world’s banana supply.

Mr Stergiopoulos pointed out that Cavendish bananas, the bananas most commonly found in the supermarket, are particularly vulnerable.

“The Cavendish banana plants all originated from one plant and so as clones, they all have the same genotype – and that is a recipe for disaster,” he said.

In order to prevent the global banana industry from being wiped out in the 10 years, farmers need to make 50 fungicide applications to their banana crops each year.
