A huge avalanche has killed at least six skiers in the Italian Alps, with several others possibly still missing.

The avalanche struck at an altitude of more than 3000m on Monte Nevoso in the Ahrntal in South Tyrol.

The area is near the Austrian border.

Exactly how the avalanche was caused was still unknown.
