The Auckland City council has been given a document called the Auckland Unitary Plan.
So, what is the Unitary Plan?
The Unitary Plan is a detailed plan. Like all successful cities across the world, Auckland is growing.
The Auckland Unitary Plan will ensure that Auckland can meet its housing needs now, and in the future.
The Unitary Plan will determine:
- what can be built and where
- how to create a higher quality and more compact Auckland
- how to provide for rural activities
- how to maintain the marine environment.
It’ll mean more apartments and townhouses. Different areas of Auckland will be able to build two-storey terraced houses, while others will be able to build up to five- to seven-storey apartments.
Some building rules and regulations will be removed. There will be no minimum on housing sizes. Also gone are minimum sizes for main living rooms and bedrooms, minimum ceiling heights, separation between buildings and requirements for a front fence.
The majority of growth is focused around town centres, transport hubs and corridors.
There will still be the rural urban boundary, but it’ll be 30 per cent bigger.
