Auckland is back into lockdown after recording four new Covid-19 cases.

The three-day lockdown starts today, including shutting schools except for children of essential workers.

The four new cases all come from members of a single family. None had traveled oversea recently.

Late on Tuesday night, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it was necessary to go hard and go early to stamp out the virus.

Auckland residents have been asked to stay at home,. On top of this, large gatherings are banned, non-essential businesses must shut, and social-distancing guidelines must be followed.

The rest of New Zealand has been placed into Alert Level 2.
