Auckland Airport’s runway is currently being shortened by one kilometre. However, the airport is still able to function.

Last Sunday night the airport started working on repairing panels in the touchdown area which had become damaged.

An 80-strong construction team is working to shorten the runway.

The runway’s condition has drawn criticism from airlines and aviation authorities over the past 12 months.

The repair work on the runway involves replacing 280 slabs of concrete. It was planned for later this year, but the drop in air traffic due to  COVID-19 has allowed the airport to begin the work earlier.
