Apple and Google have announced they will build contact tracing into their new phones.
iPhone users will no longer need to download a separate public health app in order to opt into the contact tracing feature. Those using Android phones will be prompted to download an app that Google will create on behalf of public health officials.
Contact tracing is when your movements are recorded so that Governments and groups can determine if you have been exposed to Covid-19.
That means countries will no longer need to build a contact tracing app of their own in order to take advantage of the technology.
Apple will release the new tracing system in iOS 13.7 this week while Google will offer it this month on devices running Android 6.0.
The underlying technology will remain much the same.
