Thousands of rare, ancient coins have been found buried in a bucket under a farmer’s field with a total worth of more than $2million (NZ dollars)!

The Weekend Wanderers Detecting Club organised a dig near Aylesbury, Berkshire in the UK and was stunned to find a collection of more that 5000 Anglo Saxon coins that are believed to be more than 1000 years old.

The coins were found in perfect condition, with no scratches or loss of their mirror-like shine. The condition of the coins hints that perhaps only 2 people ever handled the coins – the maker and the person who buried them.

All 5251 coins were found two feet underground in a lead bucket and are described as a find of ‘national importance’ and one of the largest amount of Anglo Saxon coins ever found in Britain.

The coins have now been taken to the British Museum for identification and further research.
