When a German artist got stumped about how to make music, he decided to let a tree make his tunes.

In his piece Years, Bartholomäus Traubeck has used the rings that run through a tree trunk to make melodies. He put slices of the wood in a special record player that uses light to translate the pattern of the lines into piano notes.

The rings form each year as the tree grows older, but they're not usually used to knock out a beat! The sound that's produced is a haunting, mysterious 'tune' - and Bartholomäus says that every tree's rings produce a different melody.
