Clear skies perfect for lunar eclipse

Clear skies made it a good night for a lunar eclipse, the last until 2014.

It began just after 3am and lasted until almost four, as Earth passed between the Sun and the Moon. The moon turned a reddy-orange colour towards the end of the eclipse. Stardome Observatory says it's because light from the Sun passes through Earth's atmosphere, illuminating the Moon.
