Black Sticks lose bronze medal match

Written by  Sporty Sam 11 December 2011
The Black Sticks have a habit of making life difficult for the Dutch at this Champions Trophy tournament but they left themselves too much to do in losing the bronze medal match 5-3 today.

Earlier in the week they stunned the Netherlands by coming back from 3-0 down and drawing 3-3 with a penalty stroke after the final hooter from cool-headed skipper Dean Couzins. It was enough to put them through to the top-four play-offs and guarantee them their best finish in a Champions Trophy tournament. There was plenty of fight in the Black Sticks today too.

Each time the Dutch scored, the Kiwis, roared on by a big crowd at the North Harbour Hockey Stadium, replied with a goal of their own. The final scoreline looks a little one-sided but the Netherlands scored a soft goal late on when the Black Sticks had substituted goalkeeper Kyle Pontifex for an out-field player in a last-ditch effort to draw the match and force extra-time.
